Part one of building an email list is creating simple opportunities for people to subscribe. There are a number of different ways you can do this, which we have outlined below.

Your Website

Your website is the central hub of your brand online. Including a subscribe form can be the perfect way to build your email list if many of your customer interactions occur online.

For example, if your business sells products or services online, you capture email subscribers through checkout forms and/or email signup. Since people are already entering their information in order to make a purchase, you can simply include a small tick box that allows them to join your email list.

You can also capture subscribers through your contact form. Again, you can include a tick box that allows people to signup for your email list. Since they are contacting you, they are promising leads that are interested in what you are offering already.

It’s increasingly common for brands to run blogs to help build up their brand. You can add a subscribe form here, which can help you gain the addresses of some of your most valuable readers. People who subscribe to your blog tend to share content and comment on your content three times more than other users.

Your Social Media Channels

Have you already built-up a following through your social media platform pages? If so, there’s an opportunity to convert your followers into email subscribers. You can simply link out your subscriber form with some consistency to help give people the chance to get on your list.

Some businesses have a lot more contact with their customers in person than online. For example, retail stores, bars & restaurants are constantly interacting with their customers IRL. Therefore, brick and mortar businesses might find that there are other tactics that are more effective for building their email list.

For one, you can place a subscribe form right in your store. You can do this with a pen and paper or you can use self-refreshing sign-up form on an iPad to allow people to enter this information digitally. The latter is certainly more convenient, as you will have to manually update your email list if you go the old-fashioned route.

You can also ask at the point of sale if customers would like to join the email list. You might consider offering a small discount on their purchase in order to incentivise them.

Another option is to collect business cards. This can help avoid the issue where people don’t want to spend the time filling out their contact information. Consider providing a container of some kind for people to place their business cards in order to subscribe to your list.

Your Email Signature

Lastly, the obvious capture mechanism which is often overlooked, you can also add an opportunity to subscribe to your email list from your email signature. This is a great way to advertise your newsletter to people with whom you are already highly engaged.
